Standards

Editorial standards

We would rather say less and be right. Every guide and tool on Probate Plainly follows these rules.

Sources we use

We use official and authoritative materials first, including statutes, court rules, judiciary websites, probate court instructions, public notice requirements, and approved-newspaper lists where available. We may also consult major bar associations or nonprofit legal information sources to explain terminology, but the rule itself should trace back to an official source.

We cite the primary source whenever one exists: the statute, the agency page, the court rule, or the extension publication. News articles and industry groups are used only for context and are labeled as such. Each guide lists its sources at the bottom with links.

What we will not do

Tools and data

The creditor deadline calculator applies the timing rule we have summarized for a state to the dates you enter. It is an estimate only and does not replace the statute, court order, or any notice or service requirement in the specific estate.

Review and updates

Each guide shows the date it was last reviewed. We re-check sources when we learn a rule has changed and at least once a year. When a change matters to readers, we note it on the page.

Corrections

If you find a mistake, use the contact form and include the page and a source. Confirmed errors are fixed promptly, and substantive corrections are noted on the page with the date.

Limits

This site provides general information about probate legal notices and deadlines. It is not legal, tax, medical, or engineering advice. Always confirm the current rule with the probate court, clerk, register, or other official office handling the estate before you act.
